The McConnell Fund


All grant requests must be submitted to the Community Foundation by 5:00 p.m. on the day of the deadline.


Grants are awarded to:

  1. Nonprofit organizations with tax exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code
  2. Public entities (schools, districts, cities, etc.)

Grant Amounts:
While the upper limits are posted below by County, proposals of all sizes are highly encouraged.   
  • Up to $30,000 (Modoc and Trinity) 
  • Up to $50,000 (Shasta, Siskiyou, and Tehama)


·  Organizations with a grant report past due to the Community Foundation are not eligible to apply. 

·  Relative strength of proposal taken into account, priority will be given to funding organizations which have not received grants from The McConnell Fund during the past 12 months.

·   The Fund awards grants primarily for the purchase of equipment or building-related projects in the following areas:
  • Arts and Culture
  • Recreation
  • Environment
  • Community Vitality
  • Social Services
  • Health Care 
  • Children, Youth, and Education

·  Grants are not awarded to or for:
  • Administrative, operating, or program expenses, including personnel costs
  • Budget deficits 
  • Endowment funds or annual fund drives
  • Essential government services
  • Individuals (a grant cannot be awarded to an individual from SRCF)
  • Sectarian religious purposes
  • Land purchase
·  Projects for which grant is being sought should be completed within 12 months of grant receipt. 

·  Projects that can demonstrate a strong volunteer component are encouraged to apply and generally receive preferential consideration in the grantmaking process. 

Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate partial project funding from other sources.  Funding from a variety of entities demonstrates broad interest. 


The following items will be requested during the grant submission process:

I.   Organizational Information: Basic information regarding your organization.

II.  Proposal Summary: Summary information regarding your specific project.

III. Narrative
  1. History and Purpose of Organization: Please include: (a) discussion of recent achievements and (b) key challenges.
  2. Request: Amount of money requested and specific use.
  3. Statement of Need: Need for project and difference you hope it will make.
  4. Project timeline and completion date: Projects should be completed within 12 months of grant receipt.
  5. Sustainability: Plan for supporting the project after grant funds have been expended.
IV. Project Budget (list all anticipated project funds and services).

V.  List of board members, affiliations, and phone numbers

VI. For public entities, a copy of departmental budget (1-2 page summary)

VII.  For nonprofit agencies, a copy of the current income and expense statement and balance sheet (only). Please note, this is a request for financial report information, not a request for organizational budget.  If current financial statements cover less than 6 months, please submit a copy of current statements plus year-end statement for the previous year. 

VIII. Copies of 1 external communication about your organization - in other words, your communications with the community (i.e. newspaper articles, newsletters, blog posts)

IX. 1-2 related photos (to help describe the proposal).

X.   Volunteer Activity: How will volunteers be used in this particular project?

XI. Please do not submit additional materials, e.g. IRS determination letters, letters of support, more than 2 photos or 2 external communications, copies of audits, copies of catalogue pages or quotes.  If you’ve done pricing research (catalogues or quotes) it is helpful for us to know that within the project narrative or project budget.  If we need additional information, we will request it.


· All Grant Requests must be submitted to the Community Foundation by 5:00 p.m.  on the day of the deadline.

· The review process may include a site visit, conducted by the review committee, and Community Foundation staff. Grant award notification will occur approximately 10 – 12 weeks from the proposal deadline.

·  Please note: Mention of pending grant application(s) in local newspaper articles, television interviews, media releases and social media should be avoided by the grant applicant as it may raise unrealistic hopes in your organization and/or community.
